Who needs it?
Every company, every director and shareholder-employee of a company, every partner of a firm, and any individual whose income crosses the tax-free threshold or who needs one of the roughly 40 services that require proof of return (trade licence in city areas, larger bank loans, import registration, tenders and more).

Renewal and penalties
Renewal & compliance
File a return every year, even with nil income if you are a company, director, partner or otherwise required under section 166.
If you skip it
Late or non-filing leads to penalties, delay interest and loss of tax-day benefits. Missing PSR blocks trade licence renewal in city areas, IRC/ERC, loans and tenders.
Common mistakes we fix
- Creating a second e-TIN instead of recovering the old one.
- A wealth statement that does not reconcile with actual bank and asset data.
- Directors of a new company not filing because the company had no income — they still must file.
Frequently asked questions
How much does an e-TIN cost?
Nothing — NBR issues the e-TIN free online. You only pay if you want a consultant to handle it.
Do I need to file a return if my income is below the tax-free limit?
Yes if you are covered by section 166 (companies, directors, partners and others) or you need PSR for a service. Otherwise filing is still useful because PSR is required for many services.
Can Legal Zone file my company's return?
Yes. Our tax desk prepares, files and follows up individual and company returns, and replies to notices from the Deputy Commissioner of Taxes.
